hello. haven't wrote in this for ages but time for a new blog for the new year. third year.
so i plan to carry on with the city landscape idea and my urban surroundings manchester.i want to carry on experimenting with light, specially the light from flats and city structure making them move. light painting.
i have started to research in to my HHC 3 Essay which is based on advertisement v graffiti why one from of art is allowed to invade pubic areas and one is not and how damaging or beneficial both are with in our society. i have researched in to different ad campaigns some that are beneficial and show so achievement in making people feel better within themselves such as the 'real beauty' campaign done by DOVE yet other advertisements have had harmful affects on society and given out he wrong impression to venerable people such as the D&G adverts portraying a group of men standing around a woman that is being forced to the ground by one of the men in a sexual manna. Soa Paule city has banned all outside advertisements and have shown some positive results by doing so. Banksy and invader are two of the main graffiti artist that i have looked at since Banksy is the most famous street artist and is well known for his controversial images yet invader shows his work in more of a playful way and acts on taking back the public space for the public. with in a male dominated art form i have also included Lady pink and researched in to swoons art.
so as that is all going on and i am tryingto get in to my art again after a lil break .. so will fill you in more when i have done more. xx

MEDIA TALKS
MMU have set up a series of talks for students and tutors to learn about what is happening in todays media about how top get in to the industry and if there is a place for new people in this industry..
week 1
this weeks was on journalism. completely not my field of practice but i still found the talks really interesting and found that a lot of the info could be used in any line of work usually.
will Astburg
will Astburg is 24 and a journalist righting articles as part of the group for tic tac press. he has worked on previous piece for a magazine called bean which is based on universities around the uk comment on the whats happening on there area of the university and the city, changing cities each month.also runs manchester mouth which is a web based media and digital spy which is a gossip website.
he himself did a degree in english and history and then went on to do a intensive 20 week course in journalism while on a placement for a newspaper. Basically from that he just took any job that he could get his hands on from house magazines as you can't be picky or you'll get no where.
his basic advice was to be flexible. go where ever the job takes you and if you have to move move because you have to take every chance you have. to ring people rather than send them and email that way you actually talk to someone and there for your more likely to catch their eye rather than just and email. also to do little notices about the convocation that you have such as the date, what you talked about what they said, and then when you talk to these people again you can comment or ask about something on the previous chat and feed to their personal side and become more friendly than just contacts. also to keep a contact list of every one you never know when you might want them.
although you need to go for every opportunity in your spare time you should also wright about something you are passionate about such as a blog rant on about your favourite music or a new tv program anything that could get noticed and something that will improve you skills and make you think more about what you are righting and what makes a good story.
John Robb
John Robb is a very famous man in manchester and many places for being a music journalist righting a lot of articles, releasing two books interviewing big bands and also being in a band himself called the Goldblade.
John is very passionate about music and the DIY side of music which started in the 70s with the punk music along with this become the new kind of culture with new journalist wright stories that mattered and making magazines that were hand wrighten messy retro style.
he explained that journalism's has changed a lot not only the way the it is produces and seen but the way that it is done as back in the day the wrhters would right about anything they were passionate about and anything they liked and got excited about but now they seem to just care if the song/band will be big and where will it get in the charts and it's kind of took teh sole of the journalist side of things as the world today you can't just write what you want to right you have to think about what the readers will say or if it's politely correct where as before people wrote what they thought and didn't care. there are still people like this but not as many as they don't want to get sued or anything.
Both talkers talked about how the internet has changed everything dramatically and that there since the internet the sales of hard copies have fallen and keep on falling as the years go bay. The internet is such a has such a vast amount of information on it that people can go on to any site and read everything there is to know about a band and also every lie there is to know about a band. john commented on that there is no real mystery about music anymore and that journalist can't be one step ahead of other people because the internet is already ten steps in fount of them and every can asses the internet and find out about something.
although it kind of sounds like the internet has killed journalism it has in a way but it has also made it easier for some people as say if you were asked to wright a piece on something you had never heard of you can easily get the internet off the web and then put it in to your own words. also a great place to start is to start a blog but also there is millions of them so you think is there any point but if you don't do it you'll never know.
the internet has made it free for music and this has evetced journalism in the same way as bands. it's alright for the famous bands that have loads of money but for the other little bands it's not fair as they are making no money and can't get any where. but it surveys them right the people should be able to get music for free and that they sell albums for £12 yet they cost 50p to make but again the little bands have spend time to produce these and so the same goes to the journalist when they people say you shouldn't be paid for that your only writing a review on the gig and you enjoy it but it's your time your giving up to review the piece and it's your jobs and your trying to make money out of it so why shouldn't you charge.
anyways, there also seems to be a little bit of trouble with the idea of who owns what.. you did the interview and the righting yet as the newspaper/magazine published it they own it and can pass it on to as many people they like with out paying you agin or do you own it and you past it on or what. different people go by different rules and you would have to watch out about that . but in life people are going to steal your ideas. turn you down and rob you but you have to be thick skinned and keep going.
so is there a place for music journalism now well yes in a way although there is no real money out of it and it would seem more like a hobby than a career music journalism isn't just about he gig or about the music but linking the pieces together and thinking about where that came from and how that links to that and how music is influences by other music and linking the points up with the different genre.
it's also more of a personal buzz rather than a job as if you right a blog about a band and then introduce people to that band your spreading the word and people comment back saying thanks i love that band now. you have spread the word and made them open their eyes to a new band giving yourself more of a person buzz, you can't make money that way but still makes you feel good about yourself.
so yer thats basically what i got from the talk it was good and interesting but not really my field and if it was my field i think i would try and reconsider as it sounds like a hobby rather than a job now teh way things are going.

since my last blog i have been working very hard to omplete the 5 minute dvd that is based on our work./ this dvd is like a p[rofile of our experiances of the year - what we have done, what we have learnt and what we plan to do in the furture. i enjoyed maki9ng this dvd as it made me look back at the year and think what i have done and evaluate how my year has been.
i think i have done more work than i had thought but yet sill maybe no enough to show for a whole year i think this has been don't to not rteal;ly being moptervated on my wortk and not have the excitment for the work or the course that i was always thinking over the whether i wanted to keep on with the course as i didn't feel like i was getting anywere on the course. as i only had 1 and a half years to go i decided to keep goping and i think this has paid off.
through outr the year i have been jumping from one idea to the other and not really basing my work on one idea. this makes the work lack a concept and not have any real direction or struture making me enjopy the work that i was doing but i would alway hit a wall and never carry on with the idea but instead more on. i have now got more of an idea of what i want to base my ideas on and will stick with this idea to develope my creative sklills and ideas.
follow on from the dvd. we have had the 2nd year end of year assements. for this i lengthend the 5 minute dvd in to a 15 minute dvd and showed it with in the presentation. i thjink this went well as i was able to time my video so it would run to the correct time and so that i knew i would say everythink i want to say about my work instead of forgetting it while talking infront of people.
as i don't attend alot of meetings people don't really get to see how much work i do or what i am working on so iu think people were supprised to see the work and see how my ideas and myself have developed since the half year review where there was none real structure to my work and now finished produce.
so in conclution to this year i think i have worked well to find more about my self and how i want to work and i think this has been the bioggest think for me as i now feel i will be able to develope my ideas more and work harder making more work.

collective vision
collective vision is a group of interactive art students from the MMU that formed together in 2009 and have been making a wide variety of work since, exploring differently ideas and being adventures.
this year collective vision has come together to great an exhibition. the exhibition was set up in the week of april 6 - 11 and was set in the noise lab 42, market street, manchester. collective vision was a collection of about 25 different artist showing a wide variety of works such as paintings,photographs,sculptures,installations and video works each with there own concepts and meanings.
the show went well with the opening night on the 7th open 6 - 8 at the noise lab and the after party at common in the northern quarters. a lot of people turned out at the noise lab to look at the work and get interactive with some of the pieces.along side the art work we had free drink for quests and performances to keep the atmosphere positive and lively.
i was pleased with my work at the show and how it was set up in the show. The piece of work i shows was 'peace and quiet' and 'county with a pinch of city.'
i liked a lot of my other peers works such as the idea of the cookie confessions where people would have alphabet cookies and they would wright out a confession in the cookies and take a polaroid of them .
i also liked the light video looking at light in the city and how it paints over the canvas of the camera. i have done a similar idea to this and i'm very interested in this concept.
alin all the show went well and got some good section said about it in the MEN newspaper.

with my interest with buildings and architecture i have been thinking about making little models of buildings and possibly creating a city landscape. i want to experiment making these models out of salt dough and creating different texturesa and effect. photos will follow when i have made some test pieces.

with the idea of bring the country to the city. i was thinking of having some fun and possibly setting up a face painting exercise where i would paint peoples faces with animals images such as deer.cow,pig,hen and so on. to document this i would take a photo of the people that took part and then display them some how.
as a follow on to this i was thinking about getting poeple to dress up in farm animal costumes and walk arond town as i films them or took images.bringing my home life to the city and making country people feel more homely in the big city rush .

havn't up dated this in a while so i will fill you in whith whati have been up to .. i have been working in the cube on average 2 days a week and have been enjoying spending time in the gallery and meeting new people and also getting out and defeloping my socail skills and becoming more conferdance in the work place.
on my practice i have been carring on with the light art idea and making short animations.
i attened the cross year crit with the 1st and 3rd years where i went through the work that i have been doing and the ideas that i have and i had some usful infomation back such as artist sucesions and the fact that i need to have a concept to my work to help my work have a structure and so i know where i am going with the project instead of just being experimental but all in all i think they liked the work that i have produced.
taking the advise from the cros crit i went back to the drawing bought and though about the things that really intrest me. i thought about a few topics and then started to develope them and try and find a way of how the work i have already produce would fit in with the concept ..
a few of my interest are arcurteture, counry side and city life and also animals and the circus.
i started thinking about the country side and the city life and how they are different but i love them both.thinking along with my light art this concept relates to it as in the city is bright light,clourful,fast and busy and the country side is quiet and calm and more white light.
i have made a short film with sites from the city and sites from the counrty side and edited them together using a multiscreen effect so that you see a clip from the city and a clip from the counrty on the same screen. the ideas that i have used are such as the calan in manchester and the river dee in north wales. where you can see like the stillness of a city canal compared to the running water in north wales.other ideas i have used are the landscape of the city building compared to the landscape of mountians in wales.
