the tree

philosophy project

from working on my idea in my sketch book i have gone from the idea of making an animation or to making several models for each quote.i did this as i have been working on making an animation i don't feel that i am getting anywhere and i can't seem to feel inspired enough and think of ideas to make up an story for this animation out of these quote. with my new idea i feel more confident and inspired to work.

i came up with this idea while i was making a background to my tree image and making it 3D . I used a glass to mix together the sand and paint for the grass base and then came up with the idea of making little models inside the glass glasses.

initial ideas ;

quote : all religions, art and sciences are branches of the same tree. [Albert Einstein]

a glass with a test tube inside for the trunk of the tree representing science, paint brushes for the branches to represent art and bible pages hanging off the breaches to represent religion. or religious symbols. depending on which one works the best.

quote : A confession has to be part of your new year [ Wittgenstein]

a smashed glass bleeding out 'happy new year' confetti . the smashed glass representing the confession and the confetti celebrating the beginning of a new year.

I'm going to find out how to pint on glass and either have some kind of text on the glass either the quote or text representing a section of the quote. which ever fits better with that indualvidual model.

Sunday 28 December 2008

for the 15th mondays meeting with m.j. howard i have read through many quotes that i have found by various philophers and i have started coming up with ideas to repersent these quotes by using objects or drawing animations.

i have three different ideas at the moment of what to produce

either

  1. a animated short film about the quotes. not really any structure of a story line but various animation sections that shows the quotes in a visual why.
  2. to produce a video of photographs, taking each word of the quote and using a object to show that word such as a photo of a tree to represent the word tree, and also thinking about the more obscene words in more depth to show them in a more unusal ways. i will also have a narrators voice over the video saying the quotes.
  3. produce several photography images. black and white photography to visually represent the quotes.

john Hyalt

John Hyalt is a sucluptuer/painting artists and has produse varies pices such as the famous windbinds set in the center of manchester surronding the big wheel.

his resent work was viewing nature in spirals and how everything is made up from sprils.

philosphy

monday meeting today was taken by michel Howed. M.J.Howard.

he talked about a trip that we will be taking in march where we go to the moores of glossip and walk around that same places that philopher Wittgenstein walked around when inventing his flying machine.

there we fly kites and other flying objects that are wind powered to fly.after we atten a event in a pub where we listen to poems, music and watch animation that poeple have produces about philosphy and wittgenstein.

howard talked about wittgensteins life and creations and that at first he thought philphy was wrong and pointless as he said the quote ' the world is everything that is the case'. meaning that this is the world, what you see is the case and that we should get on with life and not try to understand it anymore than it is.
he then went on about his belives and philosophy and the books that he wrote.

i found all this very intersting and it inspired me to invole philosphy and quote said by them in to my own work and creat a animation of some sort to do with the quotes.

Tuesday 2 December 2008

had tutorial with hazel today to show my work to he.

positive feed back to the cav cup idea but would look more professional and creative if i printed the text on from a professional outlet for example 'Tescos'

price £6.82
thinking of more ideas about the video such as an animation on the sink filling up with washing and then being washed again, taps flowing.
taking a photo of each persons book cases... could be a video on it's own viewing the fact that every one has the same lay out in there rooms but use it in different way.. some people use a book case for books. some using it for teddy's and things such as alcohole,Cd's,DVDs,teddy's,photos and so forth.
Althogether i'm happy with the project and i need to complete the following before next week
photos of washing up riseing and falling
photos of peoples book cases
possibly .... photos of people sinks

javan ivey

javan ivey is a animator and director who makes short stop motion films.

he uses technigue called strarastencil

about Javan from website :-http://www.javanivey.com/index.html

A recent Graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Javan (pronounced "jay-ven") intends to one day put emotions in bottles and sell them at a low low price from the back of a horse drawn carriage. For now, however, he specializes in complex creative solutions to simple problems. He uses his ever growing toolbox in an effort to mix mediums and techniques in new and unexpected ways in order to further the idea of animation as an artform.

Wednesday 19 November 2008

emailed 'blu' stop motion guy as i can't seem to find any info about the artist so emailed asking for some backgroud/ history information .

emial :
hello

i'm art student at manchester met uni and i'm doing a stop motion photo on my halls where i live . i found your art online and i'm really intersted in the way you work and and styles of drawings you use. i have been trying to fine more information about you but can't so just wondering if you could give me some back ground info or if there is a site that i havn't found yet

thank you ffi xx

found the lecture on the 14/11/08 intersting. about analisying things and not seeing things just how they are.

'we never know anything until we forget it's name'

you can come up with so many uses just for one object. rather than using it for just it's organal porpos you can be more inventive and using it for creative ideas.
take a light bulb, organal perpos - lighting up dark areas. now used to light up anything. xmas decorations, artifistio light art and my more uses.

video - Animation short by Raimund Krumme from 1987 which won an Annecy award. A conflict between two figures, using a line, a square and visual tricks. Also titled as "Seiltanzer" or "Equilibristes
showing how much you can do with only a square and a line

example we did in lecture uses for a pencil.... came up with over 50 uses and bet the preveous years.........examples

drawing

skratching

stabbing

made in to dimonds

straws

fishing

ear plugs

ect

really interesting book mentioned - home-made by Susan .b. Glasser

the fridge

for a section of the Cav video i want to incluce a part where the frigde does a little animation. inside the frigde there are seperate cage baskets where people can put their food in and then use a pad lock to lock it . these baskets are removerble so i removed them on by one whilst taking images and then creat pattens with the baskets. I will put these images in to a final cut pro time line and speed them up so that it becames a stop motion video and maybe look like music bars on a CD player screen.

my first blog

went to liverpool biennial again yesturday so see the art gallerys that i didn't have time to see and found so really inspiring work that can link with my project at the memoment and future projects.

from going to the liverpool biennial and the bloombery new contempories. i saw work by paul westcombe - paper cups. i then thought about my own work and the 'Cav Cup' idea.this inspiried me with the idea of using a paper cup and putting it in random places asking people to right on it and then send it back to me at a certain dayte.i think this would be intesting to see what poeple wright on the cupand think of the cup and if it acctully work. this would be kind of a example of mail art but instead of sending the cupto certain people reliseing the cupin to public which in a way lets more people take part in the project but there is also the problem of it acculty work as these people might be intersted in contributing.

Thursday 30 October 2008

Group journal session, mixing with 2nd years to discuss one of the art pieces we saw on the Liverpool trip.
The chosen piece of work was Richard Wilson – ‘Turning the place over’
We had to come up with 10 questions about the piece and discus the answers. I found this session very helpful as it made me look more in-depth in to the piece and made me think of the question that I have asked and what I have learnt from asking these question. From this session i brought away some useful tips on how to analyse a work of art and how to be open minded about the piece and see it from different points of view .I draw a image of the sink from empty to full and thought about taking photos of each stage as more and more dirty plate piling up.
Aims for this week.....
Buy mugs and Wright on them, put them in to different kitchens and hopefully get back some good results.
Think of more ideas and thing about the way I could shoot the photos and how to present them in a film... in order or all mixed up?

Wednesday 29 October 2008

Cavendish mug
Thought more about the mug idea today and though about buying some cheap mugs and writing on them saying something on the lines of ‘please use me, drink me, but first take a photo of where you found my and send it to the email add - ..................................................................... after using me put me in a kitchen for someone else to use... if you brake me still take a photo.’
I will then put one on each floor of Cavendish and hopefully get some interesting photos of where the cup ends up. This may not work so I will keep on in my kitchen and take photos of it myself.
Thinking about the fridge and although I will take photos of the fridge at different times of the day, I was also thinking about taking all the baskets out and then replacing them at different levels, taking photos at them after each change. Then when the photos are put together at fast speed it will hopefully look like music bars that you see on CD players as the music is played.
Putting a box of chocolates and sit there taking a photo every 5 minutes of the basket quickly disappearing. I won’t have to wait that long till there will be an empty box.
Place a piece of paper in the kitchen saying ‘Write 1 word describe this kitchen’.

28/10/08
Went to Liverpool biennial trip with the class, found the work that I saw very interesting and some of it inspiring, some I disliked such as the Queen and country by Steve McQueen. More about this is said in the exhibition section titled Liverpool biennial. I really enjoyed the day and found the work that I saw help me with my project and inspire me for future projects.

Monday 27 October 2008

Started taking photo’s around Cavendish and my kitchen. Have decided to narrow down the idea to just my kitchen and maybe a little bit of the corridor and my room. Thought about the different objects and events that happen in the kitchen, my room and taking photos of each stage throughout the day.
Examples –
Ash tray – I have started to take test photos each half an hour of the ash tray as it fills up during the night. As I only started this at 5.00pm on a Monday. The night is quite and not many people around to take the ash tray to smoke. But tomorrow and Wednesday are busy nights as people are off on Wednesday I will be taking more images of ash tray and different objects.
Drink – another idea that will be trailed out on a busier night. Take a photo at around 5pm of a pretty empty kitchen and then every half hour as the kitchen fills up with people and drink cans/bottles. As it gets later in the night messier and more cans and then silence as the kitchen goes out. Later on the kitchen comes back and is filled with empty takeout boxes everywhere. ‘Stages out a classic night out’
Fridge - I could take a photo of the fridge in the morning, again at lunch and then one in the evening. From this you will be able to view the difference in food as the food decreases in some of the boxes and increase in other as some people may go shopping in the day
A cup – following around a cup for the day or week, one cup and following it around the kitchen as more people use it and put different drink in to it. See if it every ends up in the sink and gets washed or stayed there forever. This could work with various objects such a fork, plate, pan ect.
Quotes- sitting in my room last night and a person went past saying ‘I have grass growing out of my feet’. I thought it would be interesting to have these quote in somewhere within the video. This would work best if I could recorded the voices but as I don’t know when the people would go past or if it would be interesting/funny so it wouldn’t really work. I might take a recoding in the kitchen and use it as background sound to the video.

25/10/2008
Drawn a plan of my floor and all the different rooms and corridors you can enter.
All students have there separate rooms with a sink in each rooms. Most rooms are the same size, pretty small with a smaller than single bed and windows that only open enough to let a lepricorn in. Most people envy the ones with the larger rooms which are just given to you by luck. Some are middle sixe and some are twice as large as the normal small room.Kitchens are more or less that same size except ours seems to be the smalls for some reason. Then there are toilets, showers, bath room, drying rooms and store rooms

Friday 24 October 2008

Started on my project and thinking of the possible themes I am doing a video with in Cavendish halls. Thinking about that plan and structure of the halls and how it looks like a prison when you first enter the halls on the first day.
Starting off the project in my room and then moving to kitchen and other kitchens.
I did a series of drawings within my room, one of out my window which overviews Cambridge halls (very disliked in these halls as they are the posh ones!) within this drawing you can see the windows that face my halls and one either side the kitchens. Cambridge provide much entertainment for Cavendish when bored as it’s like being ‘big brother’ and making up names and stories about them. One of the building works that is taking directly under our windows (also very disliked as they have woken us up every morning from 8am and then knocks off work about 3pm. They could start later and finish later!). The third drawing is of the sink and cupboard with in my room.
